Hello Everyone!
Due to a very successful Garden last year, we have decided to do it again this year. The patrons of the Food Pantry very much appreciated the fresh produce that we provided. We thank everyone who assisted us last year, and it is time to schedule some help again for this year’s Garden.
We have scheduled the initial planting of the vegetables for Saturday, May 20th, from 11 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. A rain date of Sunday, May 27 is scheduled if needed, same times. We will be removing some of the existing dirt and moving it to other areas on the grounds to fill in any bare or low spots. We will then be adding approximately 30 bags of new compost in the planting beds, as well as, planting all of the vegetables.
We could use at least 6 – 8 volunteers for this part of the project, and those with children are welcome to bring them. Karen will be assisting the children with a small project of their own who really seemed to enjoy that last year. Everyone should bring their own gloves.
We will also need regular volunteers to assist with watering each day or every other day depending on the temperature. The watering can be done anytime during the day and will begin a few days after the initial planting. This will consist of hand watering from our new rain barrels which will be installed this year, as well as, turning on the sprinkler, which is on a timer whenever needed. This will take about an hour each day.
Harvesting will begin about the end of July and will be done weekly on Tuesdays or Wednesday from about 2 to 3 p.m. Harvesting will run from approximately late July through the beginning of October. If these times are not good for you, please let me know. We can work something out.
Anyone willing to assist with any part of this year’s project is asked to sign up on the signup sheet which Pastor Steve will be putting on the table in the church foyer. Be sure to provide your name, email address, phone number, and number of children that will be coming, as well as let us know whether you are volunteering for the initial planting or the harvesting and watering. Provide the days that you are available to assist.
